The US Secret Service has 6500+ employees (the majority armed to the teeth) -- to "ensure the safety of current and former national leaders and their families, such as the President, past Presidents, Vice Presidents, presidential candidates, visiting heads of state, and foreign embassies."
Thousands of armed guards to "insure the safety" of a handful of politicians? This seems a more than sufficient number.
We don't need 6500 employees for our protection. We can arm and protect ourselves --without government interference -- and we don't have to (or want to) rely on overstretched police.
